Abstract
The concerns of policymakers dealing with the energy focus not only on issues related to its availability and use but also on the implications of its use. Because of their unacceptable concentrations, the global and local impact of the local air pollutants and greenhouse gases produced by many energy sources is severe, particularly on human health. When planning the energy system in developing countries, climate change concerns are considered paramount. If governments worldwide are to make any significant headway to meeting their carbon emission reduction targets, such as those in the Paris Agreement, fundamental transformation is needed in the energy sector, including the decarburization of industries through the adoption of clean technologies and clean power generation for households and commercial sectors. On the other hand, the energy sector is vital to achieving several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in developing countries. These include good health (goal 3), affordable and clean energy (goal 7), and sustainable cities (goal 11), as well as climate change (goal 13). Figure 5.1 depicts the UN’s SDGs.
