Abstract

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) offers lessons on how restorative justice can help to improve the wellbeing of survivors of abuse and the governance of organisations. The Defence Abuse Response Taskforce (DART) (2012–2016) developed the Restorative Engagement Conference as a key part of its work in responding to allegations of sexual and other abuse within the ADF. Restorative engagement is primarily an exercise in redress for individuals. However, the program has also had a significant organisational impact. The Final Report of the Taskforce identified a lasting contribution to cultural change in Defence. Moore examines the application of the process of restorative engagement, or ‘direct personal response’, in other redress schemes. ‘Restoring right relations’ considers how this process might also support truth and reconciliation within workplaces, after the cessation of conflict, or after regime change.
