Abstract

Igreja outlines a rationale for, and elaborates a framework for engaging with, the subsequent chapters in this work. Several different ways in which the nexus among place, conflict and communication are manifested conceptually and empirically are proposed and illustrated. Framing and informing studies of this nexus are crucial for rendering visible the complex ways in which places generate conflicts and attendant communication practices. Similarly, exploring this nexus is essential if viable alternatives to these conflicts are to be created and sustained. Igreja situates the subsequent chapters in a broader account of selected contemporary scholarship that highlights both the relevance of the chapters and the capacity of the chapters to move beyond that scholarship by generating new understandings and accompanying strategies.

Victor Igreja—Research fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF, Bielefeld), Fritz Thyssen Foundation (Köln), and School of Social Science (University of Queensland).
