Abstract
In this chapter, we will discuss the foundations of open quantum systems whose roots are in (non) equilibrium (quantum) statistical mechanics. The approach to this problem is to begin with the Liouville equation, which is the equation of motion in (quantum) statistical mechanics, and then develop a scheme that ensures irreversible dynamics emerging from it [53, 54]. Irreversible dynamics is the observed macroscopic behavior and hence the need to understand how it emerges from the underlying reversible microscopic dynamics.
