Abstract
A Wideband Microstrip Patch Antenna has been designed in this paper for C band applications. The designed antenna overcomes the short comings of the narrow band antennas in the communication domain. The narrow impedance bandwidth has been a barrier for microstrip patch antenna’s application in wireless communication such as Wifi, LAN, WLAN, Bluetooth, WiMax. They are known for inherently low impedance bandwidth and relatively low efficiency. These design issues have been resolved in the proposed Wideband Microstrip Patch Antenna. The designed antenna has a ‘U’ shaped slot on the surface of the patch which gives a bandwidth of 450 MHz. This bandwidth has been enhanced by the Defected Ground Structure technique. A ‘G’ shaped defect has been made on the ground of the Microstrip Patch Antenna. This enhanced the bandwidth by 250 MHz. Thus, the final bandwidth obtained was 700 MHz. Both the designs were implemented and simulated at 5 GHz frequency and RT Duroid with the dielectric constant of 2.2 has been used as the substrate. The designed antenna was found to be suitable for the 5 GHz wireless networking band which comprises of the Wifi and WiMax technologies. It can cater to the various C Band applications. The designs were simulated on the CST Microwave software.
