Abstract

Quality of life (QoL) assessment of cancer patients gives a direct and subjective experience of his/her health status. Head and neck cancer patients, more specifically those with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers, can face several issues which impact their physical, social and psychological aspects of daily living. The disease and its treatments can profoundly affect the speech and swallowing functions.

As a patient-reported outcome, QoL is devoid of any physician bias and has the potential benefits to assess the functional aspects of daily living. It is observed in clinical trials that patients who show better scores on QoL assessments can gain with improved survival. Head and neck oncologists should utilise the QoL instruments in conjunction with survival and morbidity assessments in the clinical practice.
