Abstract
Biodiversity refers to the variability of life among earth. Fungi are among the major components of biodiversity. These fungi are necessary for the survival of other organism and crucial in other ecological processes. Soil microbial communities are among the most complex and diverse assemblages in the biosphere, and they have important role in all of the ecosystem services provided by soil. There are about 7, 12,000 fungal species worldwide. Only 5–13% of the total expected fungal species have been described till date. The actual number of fungi is still unknown in the earth. Soil fungi are described as the major decomposers in the soil ecosystem. They also provide us useful pharmaceutical products such as antibiotics and other valuable substances. They also influence the soil structure and fertility. The saprophytic lignin decomposing basidiomycetes has the ability to efficiently bind and stabilize the soil. Due to immense importance of fungi, the present research was conducted with the aim to isolate, characterize and identify some fungal flora isolates from various petrol pump sampling sites within the Hazaribag district. Prominent among these are the Meru petrol pump, old bus stand petrol pump and Konar petrol pump. Not only some common fungi were observed, but also a few hydrocarbon degrading fungi were isolated using soil dilution method on Potato Dextrose Agar media, and various fungi are been identified using lactophenol. Fungal isolates were characterized at morphological, physicochemical and biochemical levels. In our findings, following fungi were isolated and identified various species of Aspergillius and Penicillium including Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus terreus. Efforts are also made to characterize the isolates at biochemical level for their further identification.
