Abstract
This paper presents a generic overview of the current scenario of Biomedical Waste Management (BMW) in India as per the Biomedical Waste (Handling & Management) Rules, 2016. The quantity of BMW generated, implementation of revised rules and the emerging technologies available for the treatment of BMW are discussed. Major differences between the Biomedical Waste (Handling & Management) Rules 1998 and 2016 were listed out. In support of this, a small survey of four different Healthcare Units (HCUs) was carried out to assess whether the implementation of BMW management practices is in line with the revised rules. The status of training on BMW management, practices of waste segregation, handling and disposal at HCUs was examined physically. The waste was quantified on the basis of infectious and non-infectious nature and the amount generated from various collection areas. Emphasis is given to the scope of emerging technologies for the treatment of BMW in India. Finally, conclusions were drawn based on amendments in the rules, analysis of survey and the disposal options available for treatment.
