Abstract
This chapter first introduces the motivation and background of this book. The definition of ultra-low-cycle fatigue is given, and the main differences from high- and low-cycle fatigue problems are explained. Typical ultra-low-cycle fatigue failure of metal structures under strong earthquakes is illustrated, such as post-buckling fracture of steel members and connections, fracture of welded beam-to-column connections. The correlation between the ultra-low-cycle fatigue and ductile fracture is described, and mesoscopic ductile fracture models are briefly reviewed. Finally, the objectives and outline of this book are presented.
