Abstract
As societies around the world face the forces of globalization, even societies like Japan’s, which were often considered to be relatively “homogeneous,” are facing diversity within. With the inflow of foreigners over the last several decades, there has arisen in Japan a discourse on what is “multicultural” in Japanese society, especially among the localities that are at the forefront of its diversifying society.
