Abstract
Novel material Mango Peel (MP) waste was used as the precursor for the preparation of activated carbon (MPAC) for the removal of dyes from aqueous solution. Activated Carbons (ACs) were prepared by both thermal and chemical activations. Three methods of chemical activation, using concentrated H2SO4, as the chemical activation agent, were explored to determine most suitable method of AC preparation. Effectiveness of the chemically activated MPACs in removing dyes from aqueous solution was compared with the effectiveness of the MPACs prepared by thermal activation. Adsorption studies showed that chemically activated MPs are more suitable as adsorbents for Rhodamine B as compared to thermally activated AC. Thermal activation was done at two temperatures, 300 and 700 °C. MPACs activated at 700 °C performed better at removing Rhodamine B indicating 300 °C inadequate for thermal activation. Percentage removal of MPACs (99.6%) was comparable to that of Market Available Activated Carbon (MA-AC) 99.5%, indicating suitability of prepared MPACs as adsorbents.
