Abstract
The gastrointestinal system holds extreme physiological importance, and this is reflected in the depth of understanding required for the GSSE.
The interplay of the individual components on the functionality of the whole system is of critical importance. This chapter starts off by looking at the individual organ systems. In particular focusing on the role of the liver in regards to bile constituents, bilirubin handling and the ammonia cycle. The structure of the stomach and duodenum is then considered, introducing the different glands found throughout these organs.
Later in the chapter, the control of the secretion of the digestive fluid is discussed. Highlighting the importance of hormones such as gastrin and secretin to the overall function. These hormones, which are responsible for the different phases, are considered in detail.
Finally, the way that the individual molecules are absorbed is discussed. The components of carbohydrates, fats and proteins are reviewed individually.
