Abstract

Information and communication technology (ICT) has opened up access to a wealth of resources worldwide. With the current advancements of the technology, use of ICT for education in developing countries has become an economically viable solution, especially in ODL. There are many initiatives taken up by the Open University of Sri Lanka in order to extend learner support services to distance learners by integrating ICT to courses it offer. Many research projects and case studies have been carried out to identify the needs and then to design and develop software applications, customize and use learning management systems, design and develop online activities, make assessment activities etc. When integrating ICT to courses, there are many challenges to overcome due to the non-uniformity of infrastructure facilities throughout the island, lack of available time for educators, and the diversity of students’ background. However, more developments can be done using available technology, and existing products can be popularized to be used by a wider audience.
