Development of a Society on Wheels

Abstract

This research is based on China’s Livelihood Index Survey which collects household data from a total of 51,100 respondents across the country. Using the survey data related to automobiles, it tries to reflect family car ownership in different strata of Chinese society. The analysis, after examining geographical, socio-economic and other personal factors, finds that apart from the decisive factor of economic status, occupation and employment also play a role and educational attainment positively correlates with family car ownership. It is also found that family car ownership positively correlates to one’s perception of life and contributes to a relaxed style of living.
