Abstract
The development of infrastructure demands construction sites with soils of superior characteristics since the performance of the structures mainly depends on the soil conditions. Especially the construction over poor quality soil deposits like expansive soils needs almost care because it affects adversely the structural performance by showing high volume change with the influence of moisture content. In such kind of soil, stabilization with suitable pozzolonic binders can provide strong and durable subgrade. In practice, the use of available materials as a binder can provide an effective economical way for the improvement of poor quality soils. Based on this consideration, the uses of waste products generated from industries are being used as a stabilizer in soil improvement becomes an emerging practice in the field of Civil Engineering. In this study, Calcium Carbide Residue (CCR) generated during the production of Acetylene Gas is used to modify the properties of the clayey soil to evaluate its potential usage for the treatment. For this investigation, two soil samples of high compressible clays are treated with different percentages of Calcium Carbide residue (3, 5, 7 and 9%) and its strength and swelling characteristics were determined for the treated soils at varying curing periods of 3, 7 and 14 days. It was noticed that CCR reduced the swell potential and increases the strength characteristics (UCC) of expansive clays with increase in curing periods and percentages of binder. Thus, the use of CCR in expansive soil confirms the cost-effective chemical stabilization which provides more stable and durable soil.
