Abstract

Formation damage is caused by the interaction between formation and drilling and completion fluid. When the drilling and completion fluid remains the same, the degree of formation damage is determined only by the formation characteristics. Formation characteristics presented in this paper are regionalized variables, and therefore formation damage is a regionalized variable according to principles of statistics. Furthermore, ordinary Kriging estimation of geological statistics based on regionalized variable is introduced to describe formation damage along the lateral direction of formation and a new predicting method of formation damage is proposed. It is employed to conduct pre-drilling prediction taking the example of water sensitivity data of a block in Shengli oilfield. The results indicate the occurring frequency, and the distribution area of water sensitivity damage index is the highest with values around 0.2, followed by 0.3. The predicting accuracy of method is above 75%, showing that the presented method is feasible for field application.
