Abstract

Hydatid disease in humans also known as echinococcosis is caused by four known species of Echinococcus, namely, Echinococcus granulosus, E. multilocularis, E. vogeli and E. oligarthus. Only the former three are of medical importance. E. granulosus causes cystic hydatid disease, whereas E. multilocularis causes alveolar hydatid disease. E. multilocularis is rare and the most virulent, while E. vogeli is the rarest variant.
