Abstract
Medical management of hydatidosis has been tried with many drugs including antimony, arsenic, iodides and mercury (Arif et al. 2008). However there was no evidence of any success. Lately the benzimidazole carbamate group of drugs was introduced and was found effective against larval stage of both E. granulosus and E. multilocularis. This benzimidazole carbamate group of drugs blocks the uptake of glucose in the parasite, thereby causing depletion of its glycogen stores (Arif et al. 2008). The drug causes death of germinal membrane cells, and the cyst loses its ability to maintain haemostasis and integrity (Heath et al. 1975).
