Abstract
This chapter discusses the considerations of solid organ transplant recipients presenting for neurosurgery. As transplant survival increases, more patients are presenting for elective surgery, and the anesthesiologist should be prepared for these patients’ unique concerns. This chapter focuses on the general perioperative considerations regarding transplant patients including preoperative evaluation, monitoring considerations, and general anesthetic concerns. In addition, a comprehensive review of immunosuppression and the neurologic complications of transplantation are included. Finally, organ-specific challenges are addressed.
