Abstract
The second of three folktales, Mallman includes translated versions of the Turkish Arab folktales told to her by her mother. The Newlyweds is a story of marriage and gender roles. Once again, it is a representation of the customs of Turkish Arab culture and the expectations set by Turkish patriarchal society on women, yet the folktale subverts and resists these inequities and encourages compassion and understanding from husbands who are brought up to expect their wives to unequivocally serve them.
