Abstract

In 1983, Sakamoto et al. proposed poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma (PDTC) as a clinicopathologic entity for a high-risk group of papillary and follicular thyroid carcinomas. In 1984, Carcangiu et al. reported the poorly differentiated insular carcinoma, which presented solid clusters “insulae” of tumor cells containing a variable number of small follicles. Subsequently, various diagnostic criteria and terms concerning PDTC have been employed. In 2017, the World Health Organization adopted the Turin proposal that defined PDTC as a follicular cell neoplasm that shows limited evidence of follicular cell differentiation and is morphologically and behaviorally intermediate position between differentiated (papillary and follicular) and anaplastic thyroid carcinomas. Herein, we present a case of PDTC and discuss the cytological features of PDTC and its differential diagnoses.
