Abstract

How to distinguish between follicular carcinoma and adenoma when follicular neoplasm is suspected in thyroid cytology? Three factors are considered: cell amount, nuclear overlapping, and nuclear atypia (irregular shape, N/C ratio, hyperchromatin). Cases with a high overall total are very likely to be follicular carcinoma, while those with a low total might be adenomatous goiter or follicular adenoma.
