Training the New Cadre: Translation of Interlocking Innovations

Abstract

The translation of interlocking innovations involved the autonomous global network accumulating many niches while imposing their knowledge, vision, and expectations on other professionals in the global south. Marginalized scientists in the autonomous global network built a global semi-periphery of calculation, the Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology in India (LAICO), with the recognition of the World Health Organization. Once it was stabilized, they extended their interlocking innovations to those with less economic or cultural capital than themselves in a process of translation. This involved training individuals and institutions, and reproducing eye hospitals around the world. On-site courses in the global semi-periphery of calculation primarily involved alignment and transformation to best spread “systems thinking” about eye healthcare services. LAICO consultants traveling abroad attempt to reproduce the Aravind model in a new context through alignment, transformation, and extension.
