School-to-Work Transitions for Japanese Youth in a Globalized Era

This chapter examines recent changes in and current issues related to the transition from high school or university to work in Japan. Moreover, given that the educational and occupational opportunities offered in different parts of the country vary substantially, we examine how youth in rural areas respond to these two choices, whether to move away from rural areas to seek greater educational and occupational opportunity or to remain in rural areas, for example, in order to help revitalize the local communities in which they were raised. In conclusion, whereas the labor market for high school graduates has shrunk, that for college graduates has expanded in accordance with increasing enrollment in higher education. The mechanisms for school-to-work transition differ between high school and university. In addition, we presume that regional disparities in the school-to-work transition will increase. The question of who chooses to be geographically mobile and who chooses to stay in their home area should be recognized as being a socioeconomic issue.
