Notes

  1. 1.

There are three types of adverbial : adjunct, conjunct, and disjunct. An adjunct (附加式状语) is part of the basic structure of the clause or sentence in which it occurs, and modifies the verb. Examples include adverbs of time, place, frequency, degree, and manner.

    • He died in an alien country.

    • He frequently surfs on the Internet.

A conjunct (连接式状语) is not part of the basic structure of the clause or sentence in which it occurs. It shows how what is said in the sentence containing the conjunct connects with what is said in another sentence or sentences.

    • All in all, I shouldn’t have come.

    • But you have.

A disjunct (评注式状语) (also called sentence adverb ) is an adverb which shows the speaker’s attitude to or evaluation of what is said in the rest of the sentence.

    • Frankly, I don’t know exactly why she refused to tell the truth.

    • He missed the chance, regrettably.
