Abstract
Any kind of comparative study demands a statement of the principles it depends upon and the methods that are employed. In this chapter, we will start by explaining the basic assumptions and hypotheses underlying contrastive linguistics (对比语言学) and distinguish the theoretical and applied levels of contrastive analysis. We will then elaborate the notion of the “third element” or common ground between the compared linguistic elements and outline the procedures for carrying out contrastive analysis.
