Abstract

The SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e\(^+\)e\(^-\) collider has now started commissioning and is working towards its design luminosity of \(8 \times 10^{35}\) cm\(^{-2}\)s\(^{-1}\). In spring 2016, SuperKEKB circulated beams in both rings during the first phase of commissioning, with the Belle II detector at the roll-out position. A dedicated array of sensors collectively called BEAST II was installed specifically to monitor and study beam background conditions. This contribution discusses the detector setup and three selected results on the improvement of the vacuum conditions due to vacuum scrubbing, a combined measurement of beam-gas and Touschek backgrounds and measurements of backgrounds related to the injection of new particles.
