Abstract

Unnatural amino acids have attracted extensive attention as potential building blocks for bioactive molecules, artificial peptides, and asymmetric catalysts in the context of fine organic synthesis. Biaryl amino acids, a unique class of unnatural amino acids possessing a biaryl moiety, permit the development of a variety of functional molecules by virtue of their structural features, including axial chirality. This chapter discusses typical examples of the synthesis and applications of biaryl amino acids as well as their surrogates, including the author’s approaches.
