Abstract

Gravity dam restricts the flow of water and through its own weight resists the external forces exerted upon it. The response during an earthquake is highly influenced by various parameters such as characteristics of ground motion, the surrounding soil and the structure itself. Although dam failure is usually rare past experience cracks in concrete dams due to seismic excitation are a serious concern in the present scenario. Therefore, the seismic stability analysis of dams is considered for the present study. This paper attempts with the time-domain transient analysis of the dam considering the foundation using the finite element technique. A plane strain model structure and foundation interaction effect are studied by comparing the deflection and stress resultant. The wave pressure exerted due to the excitation of the ground surface is studied using the method of tank sloshing. As an application of the developed model, this research focuses on consideration of foundation–structure interaction and the fluid–foundation–structure interaction of Peechi gravity dam.
