Herbicide Residue Research in India

Abstract

Herbicides are gaining ground for weed control due to decreasing manual labour at field level as a result of a paradigm shift from rural to urban sector. Instrumentation techniques for herbicide residue detection are becoming quite sensitive with time. Over the past three decades, we have covered various dimensions of herbicide residue research, such as method development, residue analysis in crop, soil and water samples, photo-degradation, metabolic fate in environment, effect of biotic and abiotic factors on persistence or degradation, sorption, desorption, leaching and laboratory preparation of authentic samples of metabolites or degradation products. Field trials have been conducted for risk assessment of herbicide residues in consumable commodities. Data of such trials are used for maximum residue limit (MRL) fixation. For the sake of convenience, the MRL status of herbicides in use under Insecticide Act-section 9(3) of India is also given. Mitigation strategies are devised for residues management of persistent herbicides. Degradation products formed under these studies have been identified by spectroscopic techniques or comparison with authentic samples by chromatographic techniques.
