Abstract
The stress state of an unsaturated soil is different from that of the saturated soils under the same boundary and load conditions. The matric suction in unsaturated soils plays an important role in the soil’s stress state. And thus, the strength and modulus of the unsaturated soil are also significantly different from those of the saturated soil. Moreover, the stress state and the degree of saturation of the core material in the dam will change gradually during construction and impounding, which brings significant impacts on the stress and deformation of the dam.
