Abstract
The Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee held in 1978 marked the beginning of an era in which economic development became the top priority of the Chinese government. The process of struggles for primacy between a planned economy and market forces ever since has resulted in sea changes to the Chinese society. Since 1978, comprehensive reforms were gradually unveiled, bringing about profound consequences to the whole society—rural and urban areas, all economic sectors and people from all walks of life were affected and the country’s social and institutional structures were forced to go through profound readjustments.
