Abstract
Nearly seventy years have gone by since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The introduction of the reform and opening-up policy in 1978—a milestone in Chinese history—marks a watershed between the period of planned economy and the period of reform towards a market economy. Given completely different economic and social environments, the healthcare systems of the two periods are quite distinct.
