Abstract

This chapter focuses on the transitions of youth from educational institutions, the most commonly imposed form of custodial penalty in Slovenia, back to the community. Using the Taxonomy for Transition Programming 2.0 as a framework, legislation, policy, and practices are evaluated and described that apply to youths in custodial educational institutions. In Slovenia, there are some crucial challenges impacting youth transitioning back to the community. Mostly these are related to an absence of interagency collaboration and effective program structures. This results in youth being exposed to uncertain housing and economic circumstances after they return to their communities. Slovenian educational institutions have already developed and are using some creative and supportive measures to fill this gap, but their practice is not formalized by legislation, nor by any other wider national system. Examples of current challenges are illustrated in the case study presented. The chapter closes with recommendations for future practice.
