Abstract
The module starts by examining the conceptual framework of child marriages with reference to patriarchal norms, family and cultural norms, poverty and end of education. It then develops awareness of the effects of child marriages with reference to end of childhood, end of education, forced and unprotected sexual relationships, early pregnancy, maternal mortality and recycling of malnutrition, gender equality and poverty. It reviews the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and the National Strategy for Prevention of Child Marriage and their enforcement in India. Finally, the module facilitates learning of strategies to prevent child marriages with reference to empowerment of children, mobilisation of families and communities and promoting girls’ education and improving their economic situation.
