Abstract

Firstly, an analysis of field data of an underground passage pit in Hangzhou was carried out, which was done by dividing the monitoring points into two groups, based on their distance from corners. The results indicated that corner effects contribute to the decrease of wall deflections and ground settlements during the excavation process. Secondly, a studies with focus on the corner effects on adjacent building settlements was conducted. The results showed that, in north-south direction, the building settlements close to the walls were larger, and in east-west direction, the values near the corners were smaller. Therefore, the settlements of two buildings nearby were the accumulation in two directions and the maximum settlement occurred at the monitoring points closest to the middle span of the pit. The differential settlements occurred in two directions, therefore the mechanism of the adjacent building settlements was a complicated three-dimensional problem. The corner effects of rectangular excavations and the behavior of wall deflections, ground settlements and building settlements in the paper provide a good basis for further research and for similar future projects.
