Abstract
This chapter is an introduction which provides a synthesis of the research papers focusing on the relationship between Chinese capitalism and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community (AEC). This text includes contributions from each ASEAN member country, examining the prospects and challenges of economic integration with the increasing influence of China in the region. Dynamism of Chinese capitalism in Southeast Asia is predicated upon four interrelated factors: Chinese statecraft, transnational Chinese entrepreneurs, ethnic Chinese, and AEC regionalism. Each chapter addresses at least one of four related themes: (1) the relationship between Chinese capitalism and the AEC, and economic integration and securitization; (2) domestic politics and economic regionalism; (3) economic integration and big business; and, (4) small and medium enterprises (SMEs) under Chinese capitalism.
