Abstract

The thesis of this book regarding the contingent aspects of transnational tourism is exemplified by recent developments in Turkey. To date, Australian, New Zealand and Turkish governments have resolved the issue of who “owns” Gallipoli through diplomatic channels. However, the viability of this arrangement is uncertain given the turbulent events that began unfolding in Turkey soon after I completed my fieldwork. Syrian–Turkish relations deteriorated badly in 2011 after Turkey supported the Syrian Free Army, and it now has nearly three million registered refugees who fled the Syrian Civil War.
