Abstract
The principle for steel column design is assign the appropriate steel section that possess sufficient axial and buckling moment resistance by considering the weight of section. Selection of steel column is simplified by referring to the standard column sections such as universal column. Their sectional properties are fixed and such tabulation is easily available. Steel column design can be complicated if a slender column is used, while the moment induced by the beam connecting to the column is need to be taken into consideration. Such moment is usually induced due to the eccentricity of beam-column connection about both y-y and z-z axes. By using EuroCode 3, buckling moment resistance of column section can be modified with factors after the geometry of column is assessed. This chapter outlines the column design procedure. The first step of design is boundary condition assessment and column loading calculation based on the structural analysis. Simple approach as per EuroCode3 is used to evaluate the axial and buckling resistance of the selected column section with the aids of tables and equations.
