Abstract

Natural products have been used as therapeutics throughout history, well before the chemistry behind them was understood. In particular, plants formed the basis of early human medicine, however, these were administered without a knowledge of how they exerted a therapeutic effect (Dias et al Metabolites 2:303, 2012, [1]). For example, since ancient times, the bark of the Willow Tree was known to ease pain and reduce fevers, and was used as a medicine across ancient cultures in Europe, China and North America. It was not until the 1800s that scientists established that these medicinal plants must contain an active molecular constituent which could be isolated and be used to treat disease.
