Abstract

For a radiolocation system the position of an object is determined using some characteristic of the radio frequency signal. These characteristics could include the signal strength, the signal phase (for angle of arrival measurements) or the propagation time-of-flight (TOF) from the transmitter to the receive.

Notes

  1. 1.

The applications considered in this book are those that have low speeds relative to nodes in the system. In the case of the GPS system where the transmitters are on satellites travelling at a relatively high speed, the effects associated with Einstein’s theory of special and general relativity need to be considered.

  2. 2.

This assumption is not valid to GNSS. The analysis is intended for terrestrial systems only.

  3. 3.

For simplicity, the symbol P is used to both identify the various points used in the algorithm, and the amplitude of the signal (italic symbol) at that point. The subscripts 1, 2 and 3 refer to the three points shown in Fig. 4.7, and their associated parameters.
