Abstract
This chapter explores love and labor in the performance of To Send Away Under Escort (《押解》) (October 31 2015, Jhubei City Performance Hall) staged by Greenray Theatre Company. Playwright Wu, Nien-Chen collaborates with comedic director Li, Ming-Tse to adapt the novel written by Mr. Tuan, Tsai-Hua. Intertextuality contains Peking opera singing Sue-San Being Sent Under Escort. In the performance, the character Policeman Huang suggests that the protagonist Ho take care of his fruit garden, a metaphor for Ho’s mistresses. Although the leads characters are male, the female characters play important roles, visible or invisible, in propelling the plot. The themes of this play are compassion, empathy, law, and love. Nostalgia, local politics, and pre-martial law relate to the universal theme of love.
