Part of the China Academic Library book series (CHINALIBR)

We have said that Ch’eng I is an ethical teacher and that his main concern is the achievement of perfect manhood. In the last chapter, we tried to elucidate the fundamentals of his ethical teaching. In the present chapter, we shall venture upon a systematisation of his ethical methodology. When he was only about twenty years of age, his methodology was already taking shape. It can be readily seen in his two famous pieces of literary work written about that time. One of these is entitled “What did Yen Hui Love to Learn?” The other is called “The Four Admonitions”. Both of these can be found under the section on the “Goal of Education” below, with synopses of their main contents.
