Ch’eng I’s idea of history was a continuation of his idea of nature, which, as has been said, he inherited from an old Chinese tradition. From very ancient times, a law was observed in natural phenomena to the effect that things go in cyclical rounds such as that of day and night, the seasonal changes of the year and the general movements of the celestial bodies.
