Abstract
The year 1947 serves as a backdrop due to the partition of the subcontinent with independence for India and the birth of Pakistan. Tahir-Kheli notes the impact of the division where the request to help in developing Pakistan results in a voluntary shift of the family from Hyderabad to the Northwest Frontier city of Peshawar in Pakistan. The contrast between the two cultures is noteworthy for its impact on a young girl. An unusual family background provides an early entry into the world of diplomacy. A parade of world luminaries from Presidents to Kings and Prime Ministers come on official visits to Pakistan. Peshawar is always a must stop. Of particular note is the visit of the Prime Minister of China Chou En-lai which provides a perfect opportunity for interest in International Relations for Tahir-Kheli.
