Abstract

The death of General Zia in a plane crash leads to democratic change in Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto, the world’s first Muslim woman Prime Minister takes charge and runs into difficulty on the security issues that are traditionally the purview of Pakistan’s powerful military. Relations with the USA are downgraded because of Pakistan’s pursuit of a nuclear weapons program.
