Anticancer plants: Properties and Application

Abstract

Cancer is the world’s second leading cause of death, and it will supersede the cardiovascular diseases in near future. The use of natural, synthetic, or biological agents to reverse or suppress either the initial phases of carcinogenesis or the progression of premalignant cells to invasive disease is being recognized as an important means of reducing the cancer incidence. In this regard, the dietary agents with beneficial effects like free radical scavenging, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory are being recognized as useful in the prevention of cancer. India is well known for several biodiverse regions and is a home for many fruiting trees having beneficial biological effects. In this chapter, the anticancer properties of certain indigenous fruits, namely, mango (Mangifera indica), Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis or Phyllanthus emblica), black plum (Eugenia jambolana or Syzygium jambolana), kokum (Garcinia indica or Brindonia indica), and stone apple or bael (Aegle marmelos), have been summarized. The usefulness of these fruits in cancer prevention/treatment and the underlying mechanisms mediated by the phytochemicals present in these fruits are also emphasized.
