Abstract

Energy demand in the ASEAN member countries has increased by 2.6 times between 1990 and 2014, while the world’s energy demand has increased by 56% in the same period. However, the energy consumption profiles in the ASEAN countries are not uniform. In Brunei and Singapore, electricity is a main residential energy resource, while in other countries, biofuels are important energy resources. Residential electricity consumption increases steadily with the economic development in the ASEAN member countries. Generally, a 1000-dollar increase in GDP per capita results in a 30~40 kWh increase. In the least developed countries, such as Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar, a severe inequality in electricity accessibility exists.
