Abstract

The Glenn bidirectional shunt naturally also belongs to the Stage II Norwood procedure. It is an intermediate operation in the path to the final total cavopulmonary connection Fontan surgery. In the classic Glenn shunt, the divided superior vena cava is end-to-end anastomosed to the divided right pulmonary artery, with superior vena caval blood flow only to the right pulmonary artery in one direction. In contrast, the divided superior vena cava is directly anastomosed to the right pulmonary artery with superior vena caval blood flowing into both the right and left pulmonary arteries in the bidirectional Glenn shunt.
