New Concepts of Dynamic Fontan Surgery
The lack of a power source in the Fontan circulation can contribute to Failing Fontan as well as a variety of subsequent complications. Unless the heart transplant is performed promptly, other clinical treatment is ineffective. Since mechanical assist device had been widely applied in clinic to treat end-stage heart failure in the late 1980s, some surgeons tried to adopt mechanical assist device as temporary approach to deal with Failing Fontan, waiting for heart transplantation. The new concept of power Fontan surgery aims to establish a more stable “biventricular physiology” by mechanically supporting to the Fontan circulation.
